I have worked as a psychotherapist for over 30 years. In that time, I have witnessed tremendous accomplishments, growth, and personal change in many people. Many of those did not initially believe in themselves and their ability to achieve peace of mind and inner harmony. It is never less than inspiring to witness people discover that they have the capacity for happiness within themselves.
I approach therapy from a psychodynamic model, one that I view as being very helpful for understanding human concerns, difficulties, and desires. Psychodynamic psychotherapy also promotes the ability to live a vital and fulfilling life, with understanding, compassion, and an ability to feel at peace with the world. I also incorporate mindfulness into my work with patients. Mindfulness increases an enhanced awareness of oneself in the here and now and an increased capacity to perceive current difficulties with a more open and balanced mind.
I help both individuals and couples attain satisfying relationships and contentment. I seek to enhance the capacity of any person to live a full life with a sincere appreciation of who they are and the relationships in their lives.
I received my Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from Loyola University Chicago after attending the University of Iowa with a major in Psychology and a minor in Religion. I have also completed extensive psychodynamic training and coursework at the Institute for Clinical Social Work. I began my private practice after working in a community mental health agency, where I obtained excellent training, supervision, and learning opportunities. I have extensive experience working with LGBT individuals, and I have also worked within a jail setting, Employee Assistance Programs (on-site at an oil refinery for many years), and have provided substance abuse counseling and crisis intervention services.
